Snow returning to Australian alps

Australia's natural snow depth has waned during the last week, but a decent bout of snow is on the way for the alps.

The natural snow depth at Spencers Creek in NSW was 44.8cm on Wednesday, July 10th. This was a 9.1cm drop from last week's reading and well below the 94.7cm measured at the site on July 11th last year.

After reaching 71.3cm at the beginning of June, the snow depth at Spencers Creek has hovered around 30-50cm during the last five weeks. This week's depth is less than half of the long-term average for the middle of July, which is around 100cm.

Fortunately, a series of cold fronts will shower the alps with snow during the second half of this week. These systems could add half a metre of snow in some parts of the alps and should blanket the ski slopes with plenty of fresh powder.

Generation gone with the wind

The chart below shows that the National Electricity Market (NEM) has endured a weeklong stretch of low wind generation, with wind power providing around 6% of the NEM’s electricity, down from last year’s average of 13.1% (Mon, April 15 to Wed, April 17).
