Soaking start to the year continues in QLD

Rob Sharpe, Sunday January 8, 2017 - 15:27 AEDT

Tropical Queensland has enjoyed a bleak start to the year, with soaking rain for dry soil.

Townsville's dry stretch has been well documented, so there has been some cause for celebration with 75mm recorded in the past week.

The Mackay area has already seen more than its monthly average, with more than 300mm widespread.

Rain has even spread a long way inland with Springsure recording 155mm so far this year, much more than its January average of 110mm.

The rain, showers and thunderstorms will continue right across the week. Virtually the whole state will get more than 5mm of rain this week, with the heaviest and most widespread totals in the tropics, where most places will see near 100mm.
