Soggy and cold in Perth

While the eastern states bake, Perth experienced a very wet and winter-like day.

The rain started falling in earnest overnight, with the Perth rain gauge sitting at 30mm at midnight and recording a total of 114mm by 9am Friday. This makes it the wettest day that Perth has seen in 25 years.

Falls this heavy are relatively uncommon in this region. Perth has not seen more than 100mm fall in 24 hours since 2000, and this will only be the fifth time since records began in 1876.

Under the thick cloud that sat over the city, many would have noticed how cold it was. For most of Thursday, the mercury sat in the mid-to-high teens, making it one of the coldest February days in over two decades, potentially even longer. It was an unseasonable departure from the February average of 32 degrees.

Looking ahead, temperatures will be much warmer today, reaching the high 20's. However residents should hang onto their umbrellas, as showers remain likely for the next few days.
