Soggy Sunday for Sydney

Sydneysiders awoke to a soggy morning on Sunday as an offshore low pressure trough drove showers through the basin.

Showers started during Saturday evening and persisted through the night. Heaviest falls were in east where most suburbs picked up 25-30mm to 9am Sunday. Cronulla recorded the highest total with 44mm reaching the gauge. The city itself received 22mm, the highest one-day total since March. Rain was heavy at times with 5.2mm falling in just 10 minutes at Sydney Airport.

Falls were lower in the western suburbs with most places getting 3-7mm. The far western suburbs of Pernith and Richmond recorded just 2.6mm and 1.6mm respectively.

Showers continued on Sunday morning and so far the heaviest falls have been over the eastern suburbs and Inner West. In the three hours to 12pm Marrickville had 27mm and Sydney Airport had 22mm. Further showers are likely for the remainder of Sunday.

It will be a soggy start to the working week as well, especially for those in the east. On Monday, another 10-20mm is expected in the city but only a couple of millimetres for far western suburbs.

Generation gone with the wind

13:20 AEST A weeklong stretch of low wind power was broken on Wednesday evening, as a weak cold front marched across southern Australia. The chart below shows that the National Electricity Market (NEM) has endured a weeklong stretch of low wind generation, with wind power providing around 6% of the NEM’s electricity, down from last year’s average of 13.1% (Mon, April 15 to Wed, April 17).
