Some Monday showers for a dry South Australia

A trough will cross SA on Monday, bringing showers and a few isolated thunderstorms to a very dry state.

September was very dry for SA as a whole, the fourth driest on record, and rainfall was in the lowest 10% of historical monthly totals for the Eyre Peninsula and as far west as Ceduna.

The start to October is looking a little better, although much more rain is needed to fix the rainfall deficiencies. A trough crossing the state on Monday will deliver some showers, although falls will generally be light.

Usual for this time of year, the models are in disagreement as to where in the state will receive the higher totals, however it is most likely the west and south will collect around 2-5mm over a wide area on Monday. Should a thunderstorm be generated, a quick heavy downpour is possible, and the place most likely to see a storm is the far northwest with a lower chance over the southeast.

A high pressure ridge will build in the wake of the trough and the skies will dry up, but the southeast should see some lingering light showers on Tuesday.

The trough has brought some interesting weather to NSW in the past 36 hours or so, particularly along the coastal fringe, giving those New South Welshmen a “Stark” Game of Thrones reminder: winter is coming.
