Storms closing in on Perth, scattering across WA

Thunderstorms are nearing Perth and will scatter across much of inland Western Australia this weekend, bringing useful rain but also threatening the region with damaging winds.

On Saturday morning, a few storms had already formed in the state's Central West, about 100 kilometres or so north of Perth. So far, these storms have been fairly tame but instability has only been weak.

The trough causing these storms is about to deepen and swing across the Perth area and surrounds, bringing lightning, thunder and brief downpours. During Sunday the trough will broaden, focussing the action east of the city, including the Wheat Belt and Goldfields.

In general, rainfall will only amount to less than 10 millimetres but the area southeast of Perth has the best chance to pick up 20mm or more.

Wind gusts during these downpours have potential to peak at 90-100 km/h, strong enough to cause damage, including bringing down trees and power lines.

Some storms will move quickly enough to leave the window open for another one to form over the same area, bringing the risk of double bursts for any one location.

Later on Sunday a stable ridge of high pressure will move in from the west to clear skies.
