Stormy change crossing Victoria

Ben Domensino, Monday March 27, 2017 - 13:35 AEDT

Blustery winds and thunderstorms are lashing Victoria today as a cold front sweeps across the state.

The front, which produced multiple bands of showers and storms over the state's west this morning, will move across remaining central and eastern districts this afternoon and tonight.

Mount William registered a wind gust of 107km/h shortly after 9am today before the front had arrived. Further east, Melbourne Airport, Geelong and Avalon had also recorded gusts above 80km/h by 1pm local time as northerlies picked up ahead of the approaching front.

A severe weather warning for damaging winds was issued at 11am for all southern and central parts of the state. Wind gusts may reach 90-100km/h ahead of and with the front and could exceed 100km/h with thunderstorms.

Melbourne is at risk of damaging winds and severe storms during the early afternoon, although conditions will ease by the evening in the wake of the front.

Tomorrow will be a cooler and calmer day across the state, with temperatures about 10 degrees lower than they were today. Melbourne is forecast to reach just 22 degrees after hitting the low thirties today.
