Stormy Night for New Zealand

Thunderstorms have flashed across the North Island overnight as a low pressure system bears down on Aotearoa.

The main storm system moved westward around 120 km total, from Mangakura (around 50km NW of Auckland) to Warkworth before splitting the gap between Great Barrier Island and Fletcher Bay.

Overall, over 800 ground strikes were recorded within 100km of Auckland since midday on Saturday, with the odd strike still being recorded in the area.

The complex low pressure system responsible is also expected to bring gale force winds and heavy rain and snow to southern and eastern parts of the North Island later today. Most eastern locations can expect around 25-40mm of precipitation over the next 24 hours.

Another similar system looks to reach the South Island on Tuesday, bringing more heavy rain, snow and severe gale force winds.
