A strong cold front crossing the southwest corner of Western Australia tonight could cause damaging, possibly destructive, wind gusts in some areas.
Wind and showers have been increasing today as the front approaches from the west. This trend will continue this afternoon, with the most intense weather expected just ahead of and with the front tonight.
A severe weather warning was issued for damaging winds shortly after 11am WST today for an area south of a line from about Preston Beach to Wagin to Bremer Bay. Damaging winds are expected to develop over the South West Capes from early this afternoon and could spread to remaining areas of the warning area tonight.
The warning also mentions the risk of destructive gusts in excess of 125km/h in isolated areas, along with bursts of moderate rain in thunderstorms and dangerous surf.
Wind will increase in Perth from this afternoon and a burst of showers will accompany the front overnight, although the severe weather from this system should stay south of the city.
The front will continue moving north and east on Friday, reaching the southern Gascoyne, Goldfields and Eucla by the evening.
In its wake, blustery showers and storms will continue across the South West Land Division tomorrow, including Perth.
