Stubborn spring frost in Canberra

Jacobus Cronje, Sunday September 17, 2017 - 12:01 AEST

With some parts of the country already having days that feel like summer and mornings where no jumper is needed, it looks like Canberra will have to put up with frosty mornings for the time being.

Earlier today temperatures plummeted to -6 degrees in the national capital, a striking departure from the 8 degree minimum felt on Saturday morning.

A cold airmass following a recent cold front, together with clear morning skies, led to the frosty crunch under foot.

Canberra has already seen five sub-zero mornings this month, compared to just one frosty September morning in 2016.

Although this coming Tuesday will see a brief respite from frost due to enhanced cloud cover with a cold front, sub-zero temperatures for at least some parts of the city are expected into next weekend. This is due to a similar pattern of cold fronts followed by clearing high pressure systems in their wake.
