Summer yet to show in Adelaide

Adelaide has just experienced its coolest start to summer in nearly half a century.

A spell of southerly winds during the opening five days of December have kept maximum temperatures well below average in Adelaide.

The city has remained five to seven degrees below average each day so far this month, with daily maximums only reaching 20-22 degrees.

This is the first time since 1969 that Adelaide has not exceeded 22.1 degrees during the first five days of December.

The mercury is forecast to reach the mid twenties this afternoon, before another cold front pegs maximums back by a few degrees from Thursday.

Adelaide is currently forecast to remain under 25 degrees until Saturday, which would be the city's coldest first nine days of summer since 1941.

If the mercury fails to reach 24.7 degrees by Saturday, it will Adelaide's coldest first nine days of summer in 108 years.

Looking at the month as a whole, the last time Adelaide had nine days below 25 degrees during December was in 2001 and the last nine day spell below 24 degrees during December was in 1993.

Temperatures will start to climb from Sunday and should reach the low thirties early next week.
