It's going to be an unseasonably hot day in Sydney on Sunday, with the mercury forecast to climb to within two degrees of the city's maximum temperature record for this time of year.
Northwesterly winds strengthening ahead of an approaching cold front will push inland heat towards the central coast of NSW on Sunday.
These offshore winds should be strong enough to keep the sea breeze away from Sydney's Observatory Hill weather station into the afternoon. This will allow the mercury to soar more than 10 degrees above the March average, with the city forecast to hit 38 degrees.
It should remain noticeably warm into the early evening on Sunday before cooler southwesterly winds reach the city at night.
It's unusual to see temperatures this high in eastern suburbs of Sydney during the second half of March. The last time Sydney reached 38 degrees so late in the season was in 1940.
In fact, Sydney has only reached 38 degrees eight times during March in its 159 year history. The last time was in 2004.
Sydney's hottest March day on record was 39.8 degrees, which occurred on the 9th of the month in 1983.
