Sydney to Hobart Race Forecast

Conditions are are not looking too bad for the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race this year.
A broad region of high pressure will linger over the Tasman throughout the race, though it may weaken slightly as time goes by. Closer to Tasmania, a weak trough system will likely pass through in the evening of Thursday 27th, bringing a shift of conditions.
After leaving Sydney Harbour, northerly and north-easterly winds are expected to be within 10-20 knots as far south as the Victorian border. The northerly component of the winds will remain as the competitors cross the Bass Strait, though they may be slightly weaker at times. Later on in the race, wind speeds will likely increase ahead of a passing trough, at which point the direction will shift to the west, though it is likely that the first competitors will be finishing by this time.
While the winds may be strong at times, there are currently no storms or major frontal passages expected out to sea. While it does not guarantee smooth sailing, it is likely to make the journey slightly easier.
Upon arrival in Hobart on Friday, one can expect the odd light shower and a fairly warm day. Maximums for the city are currently forecast to be at 26 degrees, which is roughly 5 degrees above the December average.
