Sydney's record early-season heat

Sydney is having its warmest day this early in the season on record.

The temperature in the city reached 32.3C at 12:26pm, beating the previous record of 32.2C from the same date in 2009.

A temperature this high has never been recorded so early in spring since record-keeping commenced at Sydney Observatory Hill in 1859.

The unprecedented early-spring warmth is being caused by a typical spring pattern of northwesterly winds sending inland heat towards the coast of NSW. The air is simply slightly hotter than it has been in the past.

The mercury will be about 15 degrees lower in Sydney tomorrow as a cooler air mass moves over the city in the wake of a front. It may even be cold enough for snow to fall on the state's central tablelands tomorrow morning.
