Thunderstorms brewing for SA, VIC, NSW and QLD

Rob Sharpe, Thursday March 9, 2017 - 12:06 AEDT

Severe thunderstorms will become big news over the next seven days as a complex low kicks off the storm risk in SA on Saturday.

A complex low pressure system, enhanced by a deep upper level trough will cause thunderstorms to develop over large swathes of South Australia on Saturday. A few storms could become severe, but worse is to come for eastern states.

On Sunday the system will focus over Victoria, western New South Wales and eastern South Australia.

The system will become much more intense on Monday as it focuses over eastern NSW. There are likely to be multiple severe thunderstorms, with the focus on the western slopes, particularly in the north. Storms could produce large hail, damaging winds and heavy rain. There is even a good chance of giant hail greater than 5cm in diameter in some areas. Coastal districts are also likely to see showers and storms, albeit with a lesser risk of severe cells.

On Tuesday the area of primary severe storm risk will edge northwards over northeastern NSW and southeastern QLD.

Further ahead in the forecast there is greater uncertainty, but severe storms remain a risk, particularly in eastern Queensland later in the week.
