Thundery weekend for much of the southeast

Friday afternoon and evening was a prelude of what's to come for southeastern Australia over the weekend as a trough closely follows one that just passed.

As a low pressure trough crossed Victoria and New South Wales on Friday, thunderstorms sparked up over a wide area bringing an awesome lightning display. Most of the storm action was over New South Wales, and over Sydney, 890 cloud-to-ground lightning strikes were detected as the storms passed. Many more flashes of lightning stayed up in the air as cloud-to-cloud strikes. Generally, precipitation was low within the trough, however Sydney's Observatory Hill picked up nearly 5mm, and the winner was Mt Seaview on the Mid North Coast with 12mm from passing storms.

Another trough is close on the tail of Friday's storm-producing system, currently generating showers over southern parts of South Australia and Victoria. Victoria and Tasmania are in the firing line for thunderstorms this afternoon and well into this evening, and there is a good chance they will spark up yet again over much of eastern, and possibly central, parts of New South Wales.

Sunday is also looking electric for New South Wales, as well as southeast Queensland, as the trough slowly migrates north. Be careful, however, as there is always the chance many of these storms could become severe.
