Typhoon Lan churning through Japan

Typhoon Lan has weakened below Super Typhoon status but still has the ability to generate flooding rain and damaging wind and erode coasts across Japan during Sunday and Monday.

Southern and eastern parts of the country are to be hit hardest. Widespread 100-to-200 millimetres of rain and wind gusts in excess of 150km/h are likely. Parts of Shikoku and southern Honshu, including the Osaka, Kyoto and Tokyo areas, are set to cop more than 200 millimetres of rain in a day, then as rain is easing get hit by big winds.

At about 2pm Sunday local time, Lan was about 400 kilometres southeast of Kyushu and moving north-northeast, closer to Shikoku and Honshu. The system should continue weakening as it turns more northeast toward Tokyo.

Wind and rain should peak in the middle of Sunday night in Osaka and on Monday morning in Tokyo.

Later on Monday the system should have weakened below typhoon strength as it begins to move away from northern Japan, leaving residents to clean up and letting Sapporo locals off lightly.

Generation gone with the wind

13:20 AEST A weeklong stretch of low wind power was broken on Wednesday evening, as a weak cold front marched across southern Australia. The chart below shows that the National Electricity Market (NEM) has endured a weeklong stretch of low wind generation, with wind power providing around 6% of the NEM’s electricity, down from last year’s average of 13.1% (Mon, April 15 to Wed, April 17).
