Unseasonable bitter cold dragging on

Apart from a brief spurt of spring-like warmth to start the season, much of southeastern Australia, is stuck in a mid-winter rut.
A succession of strong cold fronts has ensured the region has become as five-to-eight degrees colder than average and will stay colder than average until at least the weekend. This is more typical of July, particularly when you factor in the bitter wind chill.
For much of South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and southern New South Wales the last week of winter was the coldest week that late in the season in decades. In Adelaide's case it was a 48-year low for this late in the year, nights and days combine to average just 9.5 degrees.
The current week, from last Sunday to this Saturday, is likely to be the coldest this late in the year in 10-20 years for a large area. Murray Bridge's nights and days should average a temperature of about 10.8 degrees, which would make it the coldest week this late in the year since 1995.
Typically at this time of year fronts begin to lose their sting and become less frequent, allowing comfortable warmth to develop for days at a time.
Later this week, the Southern Annular Mode will become more positive, causing fronts to weaken and allow days to warm up.
