Weekend heat: Which records will be broken?

Unprecedented September heat is forecast to affect parts of eastern Australia this weekend.

This is the time of year southern Queensland and New South Wales usually start to warm up. However, the maximum temperatures forecast for some places this weekend simply haven't been recorded before.

Here are some of the standout forecasts that are qual to or above existing records.

West Wyalong 35C on Saturday - current record is 34.4C from 1980
Orange 28C on Saturday - current record is 30C from 1965
Bathurst 30C on Saturday - current record is 30C from 1965
Parkes 34C on Saturday - current record is 34C from 1980
Mudgee 33C on Saturday - current record is 32.2C from 1965
Ivanhoe 38C on Saturday - current record is 39.2C from 2003
Bourke 40C on Saturday - current record is 38.9C from 2003
Richmond 36C on Saturday - current record is 35.9C from 1980

While parts of western Sydney are forecast to set new September heat records on Saturday, the city should be a bit cooler due to a sea breeze. Should this sea breeze fail to arrive on time, Sydney's current September record of 34.6 degrees from 1965 could be under threat.

Brisbane's forecast high of 35 degrees on Sunday and Monday would fall short of the 38.3C record from 1943.

Other features that will accompany the hot weather in eastern Australia this weekend are elevated bushfire danger ratings, raised dust and thunderstorms.
