Wet start of the week coming to Melbourne

Rob Sharpe, Sunday March 19, 2017 - 13:46 AEDT

Stunning sunny skies across Victoria are about to give way to wet weather, especially in the south.

A high pressure ridge in the Tasman Sea has been generally delivering warmer and sunnier than usual weather across Victoria so far this month, but there is a change on the way.

A low pressure trough will develop across the state on Monday. It will utilise humid air across the state to bring showers and storms that could produce isolated heavy falls. This trough is likely to deepen even further on Tuesday, when an upper trough enhances the surface feature.

Across Monday and Tuesday the heaviest falls are likely to be in the south of the state, where most areas should see 15-40mm, but some falls will be heavier due to thunderstorms.

A southerly change will sweep across the state during Tuesday. This will bring cooler and drier air across Victoria, with dry weather returning from Thursday.

Winter is Coming: Chilly day for Sydney, rain pelts eastern seaboard

17:22 AEST Just as we forecast yesterday, a coastal trough has deepened along the NSW and southeast Qld coasts as a low in the Coral Sea continues to inch closer to Qld.  The trough has brought some interesting weather to NSW in the past 36 hours or so, particularly along the coastal fringe, giving those New South Welshmen a “Stark” Game of Thrones reminder: winter is coming.
