Wet week for the Southwest

Lachlan Maher, Saturday July 21, 2018 - 15:11 AEST

While showers and rain have been lingering over southern regions of Western Australia, there are no signs that clear skies are going to return any time soon.

Several frontal systems are expected to cross the southwestern parts of WA over the coming week, keeping the wet, windy and cloudy conditions that have been affecting the state for the last week.

Since last Sunday, a mix rain and lingering shower has led to about 33m of rain being recorded in Perth. Other nearby sites recorded similar amounts, the gauge at Bunbury receiving around 28mm. While these lingering showers briefly gave way to prolonged periods of clearer skies in the middle of last week, they are expected to return over the coming week.

Two fronts, one crossing over the weekend and another crossing on Wednesday look to bring some fair rainfall totals into the region. As the fronts cross, they may also trigger a few thunderstorms, though they are more likely just offshore.

While showers will linger throughout the week, most of the rain should come as the fronts pass through. By next Sunday, totals of about 40-60mm can be expected around Perth and Albany, while the far southwest may see 60-80mm over the week.

Following the second front, skies look to clear briefly as a weak high develops. Unfortunately for those that would like such weather to linger, more fronts look to cross before the month ends, bringing a return to rainy conditions.

A very wet weekend for southeast Qld, northeast NSW

11:48 AEST A prolonged rainfall event is set to bring large totals to parts of NSW and Qld from Saturday, with possible heavy falls and flooding.  A low-pressure system in the Coral Sea, a deepening coastal trough and persistent easterlies will bring moisture-laden air into southeast Qld and northeast NSW will bring days of rainfall to the region.  While there is not a drop of rain on the radar over southeast Qld and Northeast NSW on Friday morning, the mass of cloud associated with a low in the Coral Sea will enhance rainfall over the weekend.
