Perth has copped a soaking during the last 24 hours while some parts of Western Australia received their heaviest August rain on record.

Showers and thunderstorms have been battering the state's South West Land Division with and behind a cold front, causing more than 50mm of rain to accumulate in parts of the Central West and Lower West districts.

Badgingarra received 49.8mm during the 24 hours to 9am today, which is its heaviest August rain on record. Bickley's 55mm and Jandakot's 51mm were both the heaviest falls in six months.

Perth collected 47.2mm up to 9am today, which is the city's heaviest rain in three months and the heaviest for august in three years.

Decent totals were also observed across the Central Wheat Belt, where Dalwallinu's 19mm was its best rain in seven months.

Damaging winds have also lashed the region this morning, with gusts reaching 94km/h at Ocean Reef near Perth and 91km/h at North Island off the Central West coast.

A severe weather warning was issued this morning for damaging winds between about Geraldton and Perth. The warning also stated that higher than normal tides may cause flooding in some low lying coastal areas.

Wind will ease this afternoon, although showers and storms may continue to cause damaging winds gusts later today. Calmer weather will return overnight and on Thursday as the front moves further east.
