Wild weather targets WA

Severe weather is lashing Western Australia today with warnings in place across half of the state.

A strong front is producing showers, thunderstorms and powerful winds as it sweeps across the South West Land Division today. Strong and gusty northerly winds ahead of this front may also produce damaging winds in parts of the Gascoyne, Goldfields, South East Coastal and Eucla districts.

Severe weather warnings were in place for parts of 10 out of 14 weather districts in Western Australia this morning.

The dry and blustery winds over the interior will also help produce elevated fire danger ratings today. Fire weather warnings are in place for the Goldfields and Eucla.

Fire danger will also be a concern in the West Kimberley Coast fire weather district today. Temperatures will reach the high thirties away from the coast and west northwesterly winds will fresh during the afternoon.

As of 8am WST, wind gusts had reached up to 100km/h at Ocean Reef and over 90km/h at Cape Naturaliste and Busselton Jetty during Friday morning.

This follows a gust of 139km/h that was recorded at Albany Airport during a severe thunderstorm on Thursday.

After a wild end to the week, calmer weather will return to the state's southwest on Saturday. However, a new low pressure system moving in from the Indian Ocean will bring further showers and storms to the region on Sunday, including Perth.

Generation gone with the wind

13:20 AEST A weeklong stretch of low wind power was broken on Wednesday evening, as a weak cold front marched across southern Australia. The chart below shows that the National Electricity Market (NEM) has endured a weeklong stretch of low wind generation, with wind power providing around 6% of the NEM’s electricity, down from last year’s average of 13.1% (Mon, April 15 to Wed, April 17).
