Wind and rain lash Tasmania

An intense low pressure system to the east of Tasmania has brought damaging winds and heavy rain to the Apple Isle.

Strong winds have lashed the state with exposed areas getting the worst of it. Mt Wellington recorded gusts over 100km/h each hour between 1am and 9am on Sunday with the strongest gust reaching 120km/h. Elsewhere in the state, Eddystone Point recorded a gust of 107km/h and Maria Island 106km/h. Hobart missed the worst of the wind with a winds reaching 72km/h.

The low also drove heavy rain over eastern parts of the state. Pyengana in the North East picked up 102mm to 9am on Sunday. Friendly Beach had their highest daily December total in 18 years with 84.2mm reaching the gauge and this was nearly double their monthly average of 43.6mm. Launceston recorded 51.8mm which was their highest daily December total in 37 years. Hobartâ??s 37.2mm was the biggest one day total in over a year.

On Sunday morning a Severe Weather Warning for Damaging Winds and Heavy Rainfall was issued for the East Coast, South East, North East and Midlands. A further 15-30mm is expected to fall on Sunday with winds reaching 90km/h in parts. Conditions are expected to ease from the north during the afternoon as the low moves away to the southeast.

Wind returning to southeastern Australia

10:07 AEST After a prolonged period of light winds, a surge of powerful winds and cool air will push through southeastern Australia during the next 48 hours. As we wrote about last week the National Electricity Market (NEM) saw very low wind power generation during the seven days leading up to Thursday, April 18, with the daily wind generation having been under 41 GWh/day for this period. Wind power has improved slightly during the past week, with wind power increasing for a few days over last weekend.
