Windy days ahead for southern Australia

Joel Pippard, Saturday July 28, 2018 - 12:25 AEST

Damaging winds gusting over 100km/h are expected to develop over southern Australia on Sunday with plenty more wind to come during the week.

A cold front crossing South Australia today is expected to push east tonight, paving the way for a gusty Sunday across the southeast of the state. Winds will be exacerbated by a developing low pressure system that will move over Tasmania tomorrow.

A severe weather warning has been issued for the Illawarra, South Coast, Snowy Mountains, Southern Tablelands and South West Slopes districts in New South Wales. Warnings extend to Central, South West and West/South Gippsland districts in Victoria. These damaging winds could produce gusts in excess of 100km/h as well as alpine blizzards above 1600 metres.

Damaging winds are considered fast enough to fell tree branches and powerlines, meaning residents should take precautions to prevent damage to their properties and vehicles.

With another cold front arriving in Western Australia on Sunday, strong wind warnings are current for all coasts between Bunbury Geographe Coast in WA and Macquarie Coast in NSW, including many of the Tasmanian and Bass Strait marine districts.

More cold fronts are expected to cross the south during this coming week, the most significant of which crossing WA on Wednesday. Further severe weather warnings for damaging winds may be issued so keep up to date at http://www.weatherzone.com.au/warnings.jsp
