Wintery preview as snow covers alps

The first in a pair of cold fronts brought a decent bout of snow to Australia's alps on Sunday and more is on the way tomorrow.

Snow started falling on Sunday morning as a pool of cold air swept across the nation's southeast behind a front. By this morning, a number of ski resorts had received 5-15cm of fresh natural snow, with some areas collecting a hefty 20cm.

The fresh cover has given alpine regions in Victoria and New South Wales a welcome wintry look and feel less than two weeks ahead of the 2017 ski season.

Sunday's cold front is now crossing the Tasman Sea bound for New Zealand, although another system is hot on its heels.

The second cold front in this series will sweep over the alps later tomorrow and deliver another round of snow. The alps should pick up another 5-10cm during Tuesday and Wednesday morning.

While tomorrow's front won't bring as much snow as the previous one, it will add to the existing cover and ensure we enter winter with some cover on the higher mountains.

A large and dominant high pressure system will stabilise conditions across the alps from Thursday. This calmer weather will lead to freezing minimum temperatures, allowing artificial snowmaking each night until at least Sunday.
