Wintery weekend weather expected in Perth

Temperatures are currently in the low twenties across Perth, but the mild conditions are expected to give way to a period of rainfall, thunderstorms and elevated wind speeds as a cold front crosses the southwestern parts of the country on Saturday.

Showers are expected to develop during the afternoon on Saturday as the cold front makes landfall, with thunderstorms becoming possible within this rainfall band during the late afternoon and early evening. The heaviest falls are expected from early evening until about 10pm, although light showers are possible into the early hours of the morning.

In addition to rainfall, sustained wind speeds of 40-50km/h are expected, although wind gusts are not expected to be particularly strong.

Looking into Sunday, just enough cloud and rainfall could stick around for the early morning to be a bit warmer than mornings have been of late, although showery conditions will also likely bring a chillier day. Top temperatures of 20 degrees and colder are likely across the region.

Overall, about 5-10mm of rain should fall during the next 36 hours.

Cold fronts are common over southwestern WA during winter, although it will be the first rainfall for this part of the county so far this month. During the first few days of August last year, over 30mm had already fallen over Perth.

More rainfall is expected in the coming days, with a surge in frontal activity over southern Australia expected to bring a few millimetres of rain each day for the next week.
