Severe Thunderstorm Warning - Melbourne Area
for Heavy Rainfall

for parts of Port Phillip waters, Western Port, Mornington Peninsula and South East Local Warning Areas.

Thunderstorms with heavy rainfall continue across Melbourne and the Bay.

HEAVY RAINFALL for the following areas:
Port Phillip waters, Western Port, Mornington Peninsula and South East
The Bureau of Meteorology warns that, at 5:50 pm, severe thunderstorms likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding were detected near Frankston and waters off Frankston beach. These thunderstorms are moving towards the southeast. They are forecast to affect Hastings, Mornington and the area south of Cranbourne by 6:05 pm and French Island, Phillip Island and the area east of Rosebud by 6:20 pm.
43.0 MM WAS RECORDED AT CLAYTON IN THE 30 MINUTES TO 4:30PM.
38.8 MM WAS RECORDED AT OAKLEIGH SOUTH IN THE 30 MINUTES TO 4:30PM.
A 106km/h wind gust was recorded at Fawkner Beacon at 2:18pm.
26.8 mm was recorded at Springvale West in the 30 minutes to 4:30pm.
29.2 mm was recorded at Mentone in the 30 minutes to 4:30pm.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* If driving conditions are dangerous, safely pull over away from trees, drains, low-lying areas and floodwater. Avoid travel if possible.
* Stay safe by avoiding dangerous hazards, such as floodwater, mud, debris, damaged roads and fallen trees.
* Be aware - heat, fire or recent storms may make trees unstable and more likely to fall when it's windy or wet.
* Check that loose items, such as outdoor settings, umbrellas and trampolines are safely secured. Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
* Stay indoors and away from windows.
* If outdoors, move to a safe place indoors. Stay away from trees, drains, gutters, creeks and waterways.
* Stay away from fallen powerlines - always assume they are live.
* Stay informed: Monitor weather warnings, forecasts and river levels at the Bureau of Meteorology website, and warnings through VicEmergency website/app/hotline.
A more general severe thunderstorm warning is also current for the Northern Country, North Central, West and South Gippsland and parts of the Central, North East and Mallee districts.

The next warning is due to be issued by 6:20 pm.
