A chance to thaw in Canberra

Canberra just registered six consecutive mornings below minus four degrees for the first time in four years.

The nation's capital city is prone to icy mornings during winter, with an average minimum temperature of just one degree during June. However, the last week has been notably nippy in the mornings, even by Canberrans'; standards.

The mercury at the Canberra Airport weather station dipped below minus four degrees on each of the last six morning, which is the longest spell of minimums below minus four since 2014.

The lowest temperature during the last week was -5.7 degrees early on Sunday. This was one of four consecutive mornings below minus five degrees, which is another feat not seen in four years.

Minimum temperature will return closer to average from Wednesday as cloud starts to build across NSW and the ACT, limiting the amount of overnight cooling.

However, respite from the icy mornings won't last very long, with clearer skies expected to help drop the mercury a few degrees below zero once again on Sunday.

A very wet weekend ahead for NSW
