Blue suede shoes and blue skies for the Elvis Festival

Kim Westcott, Saturday January 12, 2019 - 13:27 AEDT

After widespread storms developed over New South Wales on Friday, the weekend will be a hot and sunny affair for the main events of the annual Parkes Elvis festival.

Around the region, 24mm to the 24 hours to 9am Saturday was recorded in Cowra, with Nyngan coming in at a close second with 20mm. Under cloudy skies, Parkes recorded several strikes within a 20km radius of the town on Friday, but failed to pick up any rain in the airport's gauge.

Overall, this puts many parts of the the Central West Slopes and Plains in good standing in terms of rainfall. Peak Hill, Cowra, Temora and and Grenfell have already exceeded their January rainfall average, with Peak Hill already at one-an-half times the average so far.

Temperature wise, this weekend will be a hot one. Parkes should reach around 38 degrees today under blue skies, and peak between 39-40 degrees on Sunday with the chance of a light afternoon sprinkle.

For those that want to keep the party going, Monday will also be in the high 30's. From Tuesday, the mercury should reach at least 40 degrees each day, with overnight temperatures sneaking down to the high 20's.
