Brisbane feeling the heat

Brisbane is certainly feeling the heat today as hot and dry westerly winds significantly raise temperatures in the capital, with this heat expected to not only linger but increase going into Tuesday.

The start of a new week has brought well above average temperatures for much of Queensland's south as an inland heat trough filters a warm airmass towards the state's southeast coast. Just after 11am Monday morning, temperatures peaked at 31 degrees, around 4 degrees above the normal average for this time of year (27 degrees).

On Tuesday a cold front is expected to move from the southwest into Queensland, bringing with it gusty southwesterly winds. These conditions combined with the large warm airmass already situated over the state, is forecast to raise the mercury to 36 degrees in the Brisbane city. This would be 9 degrees above the October average and if it occurs, would be the hottest October day in 14 years for Brisbane.

The persistent trough and warm airmass may also supply enough instability to generate some thunderstorm activity around the region this afternoon and possibly also Tuesday afternoon and evening. These thunderstorms however look to deliver little to no rainfall as available moisture is in short supply with the lingering dry airmass.

The next most likely chance for a good deluge will be this coming Friday, as a low-pressure system and trough look to bring widespread heavy showers and thunderstorms to the southeast.
