Canberra still sweltering

Kim Westcott, Tuesday January 1, 2019 - 17:53 AEDT

While most coastal capital cities have had their brief break in the relentless heat, Canberra and many other inland locations haven't been so lucky.

Canberra can expect temperatures 30 degrees or more for the next several days, with the hottest days ahead looking to be Friday reaching 37 degrees, and Saturday with a forecast of 36 degrees. Sunday will be the final day on Canberra's ongoing sweat-fest.

In fact, today is the eighth consecutive day over 30 degrees, which begun on Christmas Day. Last time Canberra experienced such persistent heat was in January 2017, with saw 13 consecutive days of 30 degrees or more.

A cool change will bring some relief, with temperatures in the mid-to-high 20's during Monday and Tuesday, however these much more pleasant conditions could be brief.
