Dusty, dry and a bit chilly in the Kimberley

While the southwestern parts of WA are currently in the grips of a passing cold front, some chilly overnight conditions were also experienced over the far northeastern parts of the state.

Overnight temperatures in the Kimberley dropped by more than five degrees below the long-term monthly average in some parts, with minimum temperatures below 10 degrees recorded at Doongan, Fitzroy Crossing, Mandora and West Roebuck.

Mandora's 7 degrees represents the coldest morning of the year so far, also its lowest minimum temperature in nearly 12 months.

These cold conditions have been due to a broad region of high pressure to the south directing dry winds across the northern parts of the country. In spite of the very cold morning, daytime temperatures are expected to reach the low thirties across the Kimberley as skies remain clear.

While this synoptic pattern is characteristic for the region during this time of the year, and very little to no rainfall is generally expected during the month of August, the northern parts of the country are currently experiencing an earlier-onset fire season. This has been due, in part, to the strength and persistence of these high pressure systems over the central and southern parts of the country.
