Highs, lows and snow for the southeast

A freezing Sunday morning coming up for much of the southeast before another cold front kick starts the working week with gusty showers and healthy snowfalls over the Alps.

A cold front moving away from southeastern Australia is leaving a bone-chilling airmass in its wake, which combined with a fleeting high pressure ridge currently building, will bring an icy introduction to Sunday for much of the southeast.

Hobart and Melbourne will dip to the low single figures tomorrow morning. Parts of western Sydney are likely to nudge just below zero, whilst Canberra will freeze with the possibility of its coldest minimum this year as the high pressure centre rests directly over the nation's capital.

The high will be quickly ushered away by a strong low and cold front currently sweeping across Western Australia. The good news is this front is packing plenty of cold air and moisture, perfect for snowfalls over the resorts in Tasmania, Victoria and New South Wales. Falls in excess of 30-40cm are likely over the Victorian and New South Wales resorts by next Thursday, and 20-30cm over resorts in Tasmania.

Further good news for skiers and boarders is the outlook for the Southern Annular Mode, otherwise known as SAM, is to go into a negative phase in the coming week. SAM describes the north-south migration of the westerly wind belt surrounding Antarctica, and in a negative phase, the wind belt migrates north, pushing the cold fronts higher. The higher the fronts, the more chance of snow for the resorts. In times like this, it's definitely ok to be negative!
