Quick change for Canberra

After an almost summer like day yesterday, Canberra is feeling the cold today, with conditions set to get even colder next week.

Warm northwesterly winds saw the mercury peak at 20 degrees in Canberra yesterday, around 4 degrees above average for this time of year. The last time Canberra had a 20 degree day this late in May was back in 2014, when temperatures peaked at 20.5 degrees on May 25th, 22 degrees on May 26th and 21 degrees on May 27th.

The warmth of the last few days however ended today as a cold front moved across the south of the state, introducing a much fresher airmass. Temperatures will cool further into the start of the new working week as a series of fronts move across the southeast over the next few days, bringing increasing cloud, showers and significantly colder air. The mercury is expected to drop to around 4-5 degrees below average during the day from tomorrow, although not quite so significantly as fresh winds and cloud keep nights a little warmer.

As the fronts clear from Wednesday however and high pressure builds, nights will begin to cool further, with the potential to drop below freezing, as winds become lighter and skies become clear.

If you don't like the cold, it's not all bad news, as days look to warm back to mid-to-high teens by the end of the week.

More rain for thirsty southwest WA
