Record Breaking Rainfall for Far Western NSW

Easter Sunday brought record-breaking rainfall to the Upper Western and Riverina regions of far western NSW as a trough and front duo move across the state.
A combined trough and frontal system moving east across Australia reached far western NSW early Easter Sunday morning. Here it mixed with humid easterly winds that had been flowing in from the Tasman Sea, resulting in upper-level instability and therefore thunderstorms and rainfall; some of the only rain seen this month for many towns.
The Upper Western and Riverina regions were the worst affected with 37mm of rainfall at Cobar Airport, breaking a 16 year old record, 26mm for Tiboobura, a previous 12 year record and 47mm falling in Griffith today, a 5 year old record. That is almost double the average rainfall for Griffith during the month of April (27mm average). Over 100,000 lightning strikes were also recorded within a 200km radius of Wilcannia.
This heavy deluge has resulted in some minor flooding, with Minor Flood Warnings issued for the Paroo River at Willara Crossing and for the Warrego River at Fords Bridge Bywash in the Upper Western region.
As the frontal system passes, the trough looks to shift over NSW's east, as a high pressure system moves in from the west. This should see warm temperatures dominate throughout the week for the far west, with some cooler mornings as cloud cover dissipates.
