Severe thunderstorms to hit Victoria, NSW and ACT on Tuesday

Ben Domensino, Monday February 17, 2020 - 16:44 AEDT

Widespread showers and thunderstorms will affect parts of Victoria, NSW and the ACT on Tuesday, with severe thunderstorms likely in some areas.

A deepening low pressure trough and low pressure system will cause dangerous storms to develop over southeastern Australia on Tuesday.

While some areas will see showers and a few storms from the morning, the most widespread and intense thunderstorm activity will occur between the late morning and early evening.

Storms are likely to develop over central and eastern Victoria and most of the eastern half of NSW, including the ACT but exlcudung the state's far northeast. Severe thunderstorms are possible across this broad region, with damaging winds, large hail and heavy rain all a risk.

While the Great Dividing range will be a focus for much of Tuesday's thunderstorm activity, showers and storms will also occur in northern Victoria and in central western and northwest NSW. Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney are also at risk of severe storms, most likely in the afternoon or early evening.
