Southeast Queensland picking up after messy storm

Jacobus Cronje, Tuesday February 14, 2017 - 10:15 AEDT

Severe thunderstorms bringing heavy rainfall and other destructive weather elements impacted southeast Queensland yesterday afternoon.

Areas west of Brisbane CBD appear to have been affected the most.

Places like Gatton and Amberley received more than 20 mm of rainfall in under an hour on Monday afternoon. Archerfield received 19mm between 5pm and 8pm, and recorded wind gusts of 70-90 km/h during the same period.

Storms reached the metro by 6pm last night, delivering just under 10mm to large parts of the city over a short period of time.

The rainfall was also accompanied by lightning strikes and hail in places. Although reports are still coming in on where exactly the most hail fell, radar imagery suggests the possibility of large hail, or large amounts of small hail would have fallen in the Ipswich area.

Severe thunderstorms are not uncommon in Brisbane and surrounds this time of year, but it has been an active thunderstorm season over southeast Queensland thus far.
