Storms lighting up southeast Queensland

A low pressure trough over southeast Queensland triggered widespread thunderstorms on Saturday and throughout the night, bringing some decent rainfall and lightning strikes.

From 9am Saturday to 9am Sunday, there were over 225,000 ground and cloud lightning strikes within 200km of Gayndah, with over 7000 strikes to ground only.

The Wide Bay and Burnett and Capricornia districts received the heaviest falls amongst these thunderstorms. Widespread falls of over 20mm were recorded.

Mungar picked up 50mm in 24 hours, Tin Can Bay 39.6mm and Maryborough 31.2mm. These were all their highest 24 hour rain totals since March this year.

Showers even spread out to eastern parts of the Darling Downs and Granite Belt and Central Highlands and Coalfields.

As unstable air lingers, thunderstorms are possible tomorrow around inland areas west of Maryborough to about Taroo, although significant rainfall with any storm is unlikely.
