The Storms in Sydney on Sunday

Graeme Brittain, Monday October 23, 2017 - 14:23 AEDT

Parts of the Sydney skyline were lit up by lightening yesterday, as a low pressure trough triggered thunderstorms.

Thunderstorm activity around the southwest of the city produced over 1000 lightning strikes in the afternoon and deposited 18 mm of rain at the Lucas Heights station. Another storm sparked up in the northwest in the evening, with around 100 flashes observed here.

Sydney escaped the heaviest of the rain however, with several station in the Blue Mountains receiving over 30mm yesterday evening. Parts of the Central Coast also copped a drenching from yesterday's storms, with 53mm recorded at Mardi Dam.

For those who missed the show, more thunderstorms are on the horizon for later this week, as a low and trough impact the Sydney area on Thursday.
