Turbulent Monday for Victoria and Tasmania

It was a blustery start to the week in the nation's southeast as a cold front and trailing low pressure system prompted severe weather warnings in multiple states.

Wind gusts in excess of 100km/h were recorded in Tasmania and Victoria today, while Melbourne Airport clocked a gust of 95km/h early in the morning.

The turbulent atmosphere surrounding the front also produced some interesting cloud formations.

There were reports of udder-like mammatus clouds above the Grampians and lenticular clouds were spotted hovering above Melbourne Airport and the Dandenongs. These clouds are relatively rare and the latter is thought to have been responsible for some reports of UFO sightings in the past.

After a windy night in southern Victoria and Tasmania, conditions will ease on Tuesday as a high pressure system moves over the nation's southeast.
