Very wet weekend for central QLD

Severe weather is likely for central and western parts of QLD on Sunday, with a further possible 100mm of rain expected to fall across already heavily saturated areas.

A low pressure system located over the state's southwest will continue to maintain a surface trough over the remainder of the weekend. According to the BoM's warning, this looks to bring areas of heavy rain and damaging winds to the Maranoa and Warrego, Central Highlands and Coalfields, Central West and Channel Country districts.

On Saturday, Upper Amby recorded 193mm of rain in just 6 hours, with 159mm falling in Waroo and 114mm recorded in Barradeen during the same time period. As a result, flash flooding is already being experienced in some areas, with a Flood Watch in place for southern inland catchments between Thargomindah and St George.

It is possible that within the next 24-hours a further 60-120mm of rain could fall across these districts, accompanied further by gusty wind conditions and thunderstorms. Conditions look to dramatically ease going into Monday however, with the rainfall looking to become more coastal.
