WA's summery start to Winter

On the first day of the winter season, several locations in southwestern parts of Western Australia have seen their hottest June day in over a decade.

Saturday's top of 24.2 degrees in Bunbury was a new June record for the town, records going back to 1965. Dwellingup managed to heat up to its hottest June day in 35 years, reaching 24.1 degrees.

Gooseberry Hill in Perth's eastern suburbs heated to 23 degrees, a 19 year high for June while Collie East had their hottest June day in a decade, also climbing to 23 degrees.

The unusually warm easterly winds were driven over the area by a broad high pressure system over central Australia. Over the coming days, winds will ramp up and shift more northerly, leading to more warm days. However, due to a cold front impacting the southeast, the airmass will cool down slightly as it crosses the Nullarbor.
