Wet end to 2017 and start of 2018 for Wide Bay and Burnett

Heavy rain and thunderstorms will continue well into the new year for Queensland's Wide Bay and Burnett.

December has been a relatively wet month for Wide Bay and Burnett, mainly due to heavy falls as thunderstorms passed overhead. Gympie is currently running at almost one and a half times the monthly average rainfall, with 82mm recorded in 24 hours earlier this month.

Bundaberg has seen 83% of its average rainfall for December. However, Hervey Bay, Maryborough, Monto and Town of 1770 are at-or-above their usual rainfall, with more on the way.

A trough will stall over the coming days, increasing the risk of thunderstorms and the rain that goes along with it. Fed by tropical moisture and low pressure, severe thunderstorms bringing heavy rain and flash flooding to an already wet ground are a high risk.

Unfortunately for party-goers, New Years Eve will be a wet and potentially stormy affair for many places across Wide Bay and Burnett. The unstable conditions are likely to exist well into next week, with widespread falls of around 30-50mm expected by Wednesday. Some places may receive up to 150mm over the next seven days with heavy downpours during thunderstorms.

A high pressure ridge looks to build over Wide Bay and Burnett from Thursday, significantly reducing the risk of thunderstorms. Showers will stick around, pushed along the coast with onshore winds.
