Melbourne having coldest day in 5 years

Thick cloud and drizzle have held Melbourne’s temperature at shiveringly low levels today, with the city on track to have its coldest day in five years.

As of 3pm AEST on Thursday, Melbourne’s running maximum temperature was only 10.1°C, which is 4°C below average for this time of year.

If the temperature doesn’t exceed 10.2°C at Melbourne’s Olympic Park weather station before 9am tomorrow, then today will have been the city’s coldest day since June 2019.

Fortunately for Melburnians who are layering up to escape today’s cold weather, the wind has been fairly light and wind chill is not exacerbating the wintry conditions too much. The relative humidity is also very high, which is doesn’t feel as cold as dry air.

Melbourne is no stranger to cold weather in June being so close to the winter solstice. The city’s lowest maximum temperature on record in June was 5.3°C in 1878.
