The hot, the cold and the windy: your nationwide Father's Day forecast

It’s the one day of the year where there is no such thing as a bad dad joke, no matter how awful they are (insert your own bad dad joke right here if you want). So how is Father’s Day, also doubling as the first day of spring in 2024, shaping up across Australia?

Brisbane, and indeed much of QLD, will continue its summerlike temperatures into Sunday. It’s perfect BBQ weather across the board with temperatures in the 30s, reaching into the high 30s across the west of the state.
Most of NSW, including Sydney will be dry, warm and breezy, certainly not as windy overall as the conditions seen yesterday. Despite this, there are high Fire Danger Ratings for Sydney and surrounding areas today, so take care if you decide to have a family BBQ. If you’re in Canberra, the wider ACT or southern alpine areas, blustery winds will likely continue through today, making things feel pretty chilly.

Our southeastern states are continuing to be battered by damaging-to-destructive winds, with Tasmania doing its best to scoot across the Tasman Sea and join New Zealand. It is absolutely a day to stay indoors across Vic, Tas and southeastern SA including Melbourne, Hobart and even Adelaide. Overall, 30-70mm of rain and a decent amount of snow is possible over parts of Tas today, with gusty showers continuing over the rest of southern Vic and southeast SA ahead of the next front bearing down tonight.
This next front is already crossing southwest WA. It’s risky business heading out without an umbrella in Perth today – it may just rain on your parade! On top of that, temperatures are set to stay below 20 degrees for most of the southwest, so it certainly won’t hurt to bring a jumper with you.

The NT and northern WA are basking in the rather warm glow of being the hottest parts of the country today, with temperatures forecast to hit the mid-to-high 30s away from the coast. Our northernmost capital Darwin has a fight on its hands with Brisbane to be the hottest capital city today. There is some patchy cloud about, but don't let it cloud your choices in what do today; rain is highly unlikely.
So there you have it – Father’s Day 2024 is indeed set to be a varied one across the country, and the north certainly looks more desirable for an outdoor day than the south. Wherever you are in Australia, we hope you’re enjoying your Father’s Day, especially the dads.
