Late October snowfalls in Vic, Tas

Snow fell overnight in elevated parts of Tasmania and the alpine areas of Victoria as a cold front whipped through.

This was the Friday morning scene at Mt Baw Baw – the closest mainland downhill ski resort to either Sydney or Melbourne at less than three hours from the Melbourne CBD.

Temps fell below –3°C at several Victorian alpine weather stations, while the lowest temp recorded in Tasmania was –3.8°C at kunanyi/Mt Wellington, where snow also fell.

The cold front that brought the snow and chilly weather has already moved well out into the Tasman Sea, with cool, brisk winds extending to Sydney and further up the NSW coast.

Those cool winds won't make it further north than the NSW coast for much of Friday, with Brisbane expecting a top of 30°C today.

But max temps will drop by about five degrees on Saturday as cooler southeasterlies extend across southeast Queensland. Whether the winds of political change blow in the Queensland election remains to be seen.
